Aft Cockpit Trim & Coaming Boards Varnish

Aug 21, 2025

Two critical components remain to be fabricated for the brightwork: the taffrail and the aft cockpit trim. Today I tackled the aft cockpit trim. This trim piece is transverse between the coaming board, and on the aft-end of the cockpit. I placed the recently fabricated coaming boards into position, and using a small hydraulic jack, pushed them into their final position, as if screwed and secured to the fiberglass backing. I then used a combination of the old trim, new measurements, and aesthetics to determine the dimensions and overall geometry of the new piece.

Back in the shop I removed the trim piece, in rough form, from the blank mahogany, and then cleaned up the surfaces with both a router and human hand. At this point, I took the new trim back to biscuit and iterated through positioning and sanding until I had achieved desired fit. I placed the trim piece back in the shop to ruminate on the overall result...I may decide to change this piece a bit, but will be "on the house" so to speak. More to come I'm sure!

To finish out the session, I turned to the coaming boards themselves, solvent-wiped the surfaces and applied a thinned coat of varnish - the sealer coat.
