I spent a bit of time after office hours to prepare the tiller for installation. This primarily meant application of varnish after a quick scuffing with 220-grit paper. As I started in on the varnished tiller, I quickly realized that 220 was not the grade paper to best serve my efforts, and so switched to 60-grit paper! The varnish currently on the tiller was uneven and showed signs of runs to the underside as if the previous applications were done in situ on Biscuit. There were significant "lumps" of cured varnish on the underside, and it was generally uneven in application across the entirety of the surface.

I worked the 60-grit paper to remove the uneven coating of cured varnish to start fresh, and in the process only burned through in a couple locations. There was a significant amount of varnish on the tiller!

After bringing the surface to fair, I finished with a few passes with 220-grit paper, vacuumed the tiller to remove most of the sanding detritus and then cleaned thoroughly with acetone.

I mounted a clamp to a stud to act as support in the varnishing process, did a final cleaning with acetone and then applied a fresh coat of varnish. A few more will be sufficient in restoring the tiller.
