Continued Coachroof Repair: Skim Coat (7-30-24)
Jul 30, 2024
I had just a bit of time in the late afternoon today to get back onto Biscuit and continue moving the coachroof repair forward. After removing the peel ply, always a satisfying process, I donned the gloves and mask for a quick sanding of the surface. The peel ply prevents amine blush from settling on the fiberglass surface...moving it to the surface of the peel ply. Remove the peel ply and with it goes the amine blush. A time-saver to be sure. I used a 5" random orbital with a 60-grit disc, and occasionally placing a straightedge onto the work surface, I was able to get the high spots pulled back and ready for fairing compound.
After completion of the sanding, I thoroughly vacuumed the surface and solvent-washed the work surface. In the shop, I mixed a batch of thickened epoxy (406/407 combination), and with a wide trowel spread it across the surface. The initial skim coat appeared good, but a second is most likely needed.
