Fabricating Cockpit & Companionway Trim (5-5-25)

May 5, 2025

Having the coaming boards nearly complete - needing to dry-mount and locate fastener holes to secure to the fiberglass cockpit as well as securing the cleats and winch bases - I decided to move on to the cockpit and companionway trim boards. Heading out to the shop, I stole a bit of time after the day job to begin working on these trim components.

I located the original exterior companionway trim and the cockpit seat trim boards, and then matched those boards to a 'plank' of mahogany. These new boards would be able to be removed from this one plank...with material left over.

I first measured the thickness of the original trim pieces (5/8"), set up the thickness planer and planed the mahogany plank to 5/8". I tucked the thickness planer away and moved over to the table. saw. I took width measurements and, first, began to remove the cockpit seat trim boards. Next, I removed the port and starboard companionway trim - which consisted of vertical trim to capture the washboards and hatch boards which capture the companionway slide hatch.

With all new boards planed and cut to width, I turned to cleaning up the shop and closing for the evening.
