Final Primer for Biscuit & Final Mast Finish Paint

Aug 18, 2025

I've reached yet another milestone in Biscuit's restoration with the mast finish paint completed and the primer paint on the hull, decks, and cockpit completed. The dry-fitting of the new brightwork comes next as well as the reassembly of the mast fittings - as well as the boom fitting, having completed the finish paint on it.

I started the day's work by a scuffing of the mast with 600-grit paper, followed by cleaning the surface with a solvent wipe down. I then mixed a small cup of the Total Boat Wet Edge product, thinned with a bit of brushing thinner, and then applied the final coat of gloss white. The mast was left to cure.

I gathered additional sanding materials, among other needed supplies, and headed over to the paint booth for the sanding of the cockpit. With the hot temperatures currently, I decided to split the final primer application to the decks and cockpit by focusing each session on either the decks or cockpit. With the decks receiving its final primer application a few days earlier, I was set to complete the cockpit area. Complete with the shop fan pointed on me and a headband to control perspiration from constantly fouling the surfaces, I set out to sand the smooth finish and complete the priming work. With 240-grit paper, I made my way around the cockpit, working the tight gutters and the open field spaces. The work went much better with the fan's assistance, and soon transitioned to vacuuming the surfaces and wiping down with solvent to prep for the primer. With Biscuit set to receive primer, I headed back to the shop to mix a cup of Alexseal primer and to gather the remaining items needed for the job. Back in the paint booth, I readied the materials and placed them on the side deck for convenient access and spent the remaining 4 to 5 minutes of induction time in front of the fan. I worked the tighter areas, companionway trim areas and the cockpit seat hatch gutters, before transitioning to the larger, flatter surfaces. The primer laid down nicely and I soon realized this would be the final application.

Next on the docket will be dry-fitting the new mahogany brightwork before removing and applying the Alexseal finish paint.
