Port Rub Rail Dry-fit & Varnish

Sep 15, 2025

Continuing on with the brightwork dry-fit process, I turned to the port rub rail for its initial installation and fitting process. I stepped the screw size down to #8s with this smaller rail. Like the toe rails, once I had this fitted to the boat there became areas of further work to be done to achieve the look desired.

I started at the bow of Biscuit and worked toward the stern, capturing the rail with a couple consecutive fasteners and then moving to every other. After a few feet, I doubled back and inserted the bung holes initially skipped. The process was straightforward: drilling out a pilot hole with 7/64" bit and then following up with cleaning out the drill debris and following with a #8 fastener.

The starboard rail will come later this week, and by the weekend I should be dialing in the custom work needed to reach the desired fit. I finished the evening with a quick sand and varnish on the pieces in the shop.

Total Hrs: 1.5
