Rough Dimensioning Coaming Return Blocks & Bungs
Sep 1, 2025
Continuing the effort to get all of the various brightwork components completed and dry-fitted prior to paint, I worked on the coaming return blocks today to get at least the new blanks prepped and the templates created. In my previous trip to the shop, I glued up a couple mahogany boards for each of the return blocks to mount to the forward portion of the coaming boards - reducing deck-wash from spilling into the cockpit as the boat is healed over. On the table saw, I trimmed the portion of the blanks that ran long resulting in neat rectangular blocks from which to pull the new port and starboard return blocks from. I set the new blanks to the side, grabbed some supplies , and headed over to Biscuit to prepare templates for the new port and starboard return blocks. Because I was fabricating new brightwork for Biscuit there was little potential for the old ones to fit, but I took them along nonetheless to test fit them. I secured a brace between the new coaming boards and slid the old return blocks in place, and as I imagined, while they generally took to the space, the fit was no where near acceptable. So on to templating.
With cardboard, utility knife, and a compass to scribe the surface onto the cardboard, I iterated measuring, marking, and cutting until I achieved the final shape of each of the return block templates. Back in the shop, I trimmed the templates to remove the unwanted material and set them aside for further work. Family commitments limited time at the shop today, but before knocking off, I managed to complete fabrication of the bungs needed for certain pieces of the deck trim and completed the first sealer coat of varnish to the aft cockpit trim.
