Sanding & 2nd Round of Fairing on Thru-hull and Motor Mount Deck Plate Core Repairs
Aug 29, 2024
Arriving at the shop, I quickly got into sanding mode with the smaller 5" random and Bosch vac system. The previous work was fiberglass patch installation and fairing of the original thru-hulls, as well as the motor mount deck plate core work. After water-washing the work surfaces, removing the amine blush from the cured epoxy surface, I went to work with 80-grit discs on the 5" random orbital. I alternated between sanding and checking fair with a straight edge until I arrived at a near perfect surface. In this manner, I worked my way through all three repair areas before vacuuming and solvent-washing the surfaces.
In the shop, I mixed a small pot of epoxy and then thickened it with the usual combo of West System's 406 colloidal silica and 407 low-density fairing compound. With a large trowel, I applied the second (and final) skim coat to the work surfaces....and buttoned up Biscuit. Checking the work on a trip to the shop (kids, chores never go away), I ran my hand across the cured second fairing coat - perfectly fair!
