Sanding and Priming Cockpit & Decks
Aug 2, 2025
With the hull ready for finish paint, I moved on to the cockpit and decks to also ready them for applications of primer and eventually finish paint. To this point, the cockpit and decks have been readied for primer through fairing and filler work - fairing filler, sand and repeat.
I started the day by hand-sanding the entirety of surfaces to be primed today. I grabbed a few 120-grit disc and methodically made my way around the cockpit and over the decks as a final prep for the Alexseal primer paint. The sanding work was followed up by a thorough vacuum of the surface and then a good solvent-wash. With the surfaces prepped and cleaned, I moved on to mixing a ~16oz pot of Alexseal finish paint primer and set it to the side for its required 15-minute induction period.
After the 15-minute induction period I moved on to painting, using a foam brush first for the tighter spaces (cockpit seat hatch gutters and radius corners), but then moved into the foam roller for the fields. The primer went on beautifully despite battling dripping sweat! This should be one of three coast of primer as I build into a good substrate for finish paint.
