Building Boot Stripe, Cockpit and Deck Paint, and Bilge Cover Plate
Dec 14, 2025
Over the last few days, I worked in getting paint to the point of its final coat - the several areas that I am concurrently working on: boot stripe, cockpit, coach roof, and hatches. Oh, and I cannot overlook the non-skid paint, which will be the final to-do on the paint side of the business. Thrown in here, I managed to fabricate a new bilge cover plate. The existing plate, a rough 5" X 5" plate, was made of a plywood and varnished. The small access plate was screaming for an update, so I worked this small component in across the few days to bring to a point of varnish. The plate is of mahogany material, taken from the same stock that the balance of the brightwork was fabricated from.
Most of the work that was of primary focus was paint, and the boot stripe was touched daily to bring to a satisfactory build to call it complete. In total, the red boot stripe took seven coats until I was satisfied with the result. I should caveat that by saying that I have yet to review closely with a light bright enough to bring me to conclusion, but I believe the boot stripe is good at this point.
In the work days I also managed to sand the cockpit and apply an additional coat of Alexseal to these surfaces. Additionally, I managed to sand the decks and apply a coat to this broad, horizontal field of work too. The tape will be removed from the boot stripe, after a review of the results, and curing of the paint will be required until I can tape off for the final bottom paint application.
A return to focus on the varnishing is next as I prepare for installation of the brightwork. All fasteners has been procured for the brightwork, as well as bedding compound (Stika 291-LOT), and. I am eager to see Biscuit come together!
