Bunging the Rails
Feb 8, 2026
With the rub rails and the toe rails recently undergoing final install, I decided to brings the rails closer to completion by bunging the fastener holes. I grabbed the small tub of bungs (cut from the same mahogany used in the fabrication of Biscuit's new brightwork) a small amount of varnish, some disposable shop gloves, and a hammer, and then headed over to Biscuit.
I wore a disposable glove on my left hand, dipped the individual bung in a bit of varnish to fully coat it, and then tapped the bung into position. I started at the starboard bow, applying bungs to the rub rail, and moved toward the aft. I then moved up to the toe rail and worked my way forward to complete the starboard side. I repeated this process on Biscuit's port rails. In the coming days, after the varnish fully cures, I will come back to trim the excess bung material and sand to a smooth surface prior to applying additional coats of varnish.
More brightwork in the coming days.
