Completing the Interior (6-21-25)
Jun 21, 2025
Back from a week's vacation (pictured below, sailing a Dyer Dhow I had restored and gifted my brother for use at their summer lake house) and tackling the needed items off of the chore list, I managed a few hours at the shop on Saturday. With the Alexseal marine coatings having just arrived and the deck, cockpit, and hull topsides finish painting in the now near-term, I was anxious to wrap the majority of the interior. Upon arriving at the shop, I got straight to work on sanding the last application of paint on the interior surfaces that required further work. The "work" in this case was simply more coats or filling small imperfections in the surface to then overcoat with the finish paint. I roughed up the surfaces requiring the additional work, vacuumed those surfaces and finished with a solvent-wash.
Before getting to that surface work, I wanted to fill three bolt holes through the cabin sole, just aft of the v-berth platform. These bolt holes were securing a small head, complete with intake and discharge thru-hulls. With a small belt grinder and a vacuum hose in close proximity, I ground away the gelcoat revealing the glass top skin beneath, and further ground a taper around the bolt holes. I then templated for small fiberglass patches - two layers each, one a 1708 biaxial and a second 6oz layer on top. Prior to wetting the glass out, I filled the old bolt holes with West System epoxy thickened with a combination of West System's 404 high-density and 406 colloidal silica. With the holes and surface faired with the thickened epoxy, I placed the two layers of glass in place and then finished with peel ply. Returning Monday afternoon, I will remove the peel ply and apply fairing filler to begin bringing the surface into fair prior to paint.
With the cabin sole work taken as far as I could, I turned to the surface imperfections in the cabin space. I prepared a small batch of TotalBoat's TotalFair product and worked my way around the cabin's surfaces filling the pin holes and larger abnormalities. Sanding and paint to follow this work. The final bit of work for the afternoon was to apply additional coats of paint to the quarter berth space, both port and starboard. This would wrap the post-vacation visit to Biscuit....work ramping up in the coming weeks.
