Final Fairing for Thru Hulls

Oct 27, 2025

I stopped by the shop after the old "9-to-5" to continue the progress on the installation of thru hulls (skin fittings). After removing the thru hulls, which were in place to help establish the final surface of the hull for a seamless fit, I continued with removal of the protective tape followed by a water wash to remove amine blush. With the surfaces of the hull exposed now, I sanded both with the 5" random orbital and by hand to bring the proud fairing filler down to smooth transitions to the hull.

After the initial sanding, I reinstalled the thru hulls to see where the remaining work was. For the most part the fit was really good; however, a few low spots revealed themselves as is often the case with curing (shrinking) epoxy. I removed the thru hulls and wiped the sanding residue clean with acetone. to prepare for additional fairing filler.

I took a quick trip to the shop to retrieve the Totalboat TotalFair product - a two part (two color) fairing compound that when mixed turns to a green color. This is an easy to sand fairing compound used for those thin and final applications prior to primer and then paint. I mixed the two parts together and then applied to the portions of the hull that required additional fairing filler. The application was a skim coat and will be the final application prior to installation of the thru hulls and bottom paint. A quick bit of work on the boat this evening.
