First Coat of Finish Paint on the Mast (6-10-25)

Jun 10, 2025

With a trip coming up that would take me off the refit for a week, I was focused on getting at least one coat of finish paint on the mast. On Sunday, I had sanded the port side of the mast, accidentally burned through the primer in a few spots and so touched up with more primer prior to leaving for the day. Monday evening I went back and sanded through spot-primed locations and then laid the first coat of finish paint on the port side of the mast. The owner had selected TotalBoat's Wet Edge product and so this was applied to the mast.

On Tuesday evening I again focused on the mast. I rolled the mast over to access the starboard half, and then sanded with 220-grit the entire length of the starboard side. I was careful to not burn through the primer so as to avoid a wasted evening of painting. After sanding the primer, I came back and solvent-washed the mast to remove all sanding residue and then prepared a small pot of finish paint. With a foam brush I applied the paint, starting at the base and moving to the mast head, all the while painting into the recently painted section and blending or smoothing out the application.

The plan is to alternate the starboard and port side with successive coats of finish paint. The final coat will be done with the mast fully suspended so as to avoid any unintentional paint line.
