First Top Coat on Underside of Hatches

Mar 18, 2026

Today was an ongoing effort to finalize the hatches by application of the first top coat of paint to the underside of the hatches (two cockpit seat hatches and the companionway slide hatch). I began by sanding the additional fiberglass applied to the cockpit hatches, using the 5" ROS, the 1/2" finger sander and by hand. I vacuumed the sanding dust and wiped the surfaces with acetone. I then moved the cockpit hatches into the shop, and fetched the companionway slide hatch from off of Biscuit.

I poured a bit of paint into a small 4" roller pan, wiped down the companionway slide hatch with acetone, and then began to carefully apply the paint to the underside of all three hatches. Upon finishing the third hatch, I circled back to the first and applied a light second coat. Cold days are settling in, and so I will wait for a couple days until hand-sanding and application of the second, and likely, final coat. Biscuit to soon move back over to the shop to finish off the restoration.
