Hand Sanding Stbd Cockpit

Apr 13, 2024

It's inevitable but never really contemplated when undertaking a restoration project - whether a vintage car, boat, or vintage tool - the human hand must engage the surfaces of complex shapes! The tight radii through the cockpit required the fingers to get in the action, like the intersection of vertical and horizontal surfaces, or around the base of the tiller head, and the cockpit hatch gutters. There's enough fun for everyone! I used the discarded sanding discs from the previous work session, having enough abrasive surface remaining to use in the fine detail sanding work. The focus for this work session started at the base for the tiller head and then worked to starboard and moved forward to the aft bulkhead of the cabin.

The work was repetitive (as one might imagine rubbing a sanding pad back and forth across a surface might be), and slow-going with the lack of a mechanical advantage. In the end, I managed to complete the starboard portion of the cockpit, and began removing cockpit drain components on the starboard side.

I removed the starboard cockpit scupper strainer; however, lacking a solvent strong enough to remove surface contaminates, I decided to wait until I returned to remove the painted surfaces around this fixture. I went below and began to disassemble the cockpit scupper hose and what I could of the through-hull. NOT A SALTWATER APPROVED SEACOCK, and DANGEROUS FOR EVEN FRESHWATER! These "big box" plumbing valves are NOT encouraged, and further, due to the location, these seacocks require a flange to protect from an accidental impact. These valves will be pulled and replaced with proper seacocks.

Before knocking off for the day, I spent a bit of time sanding the aft deck core repair, and then applied a third round of fairing filler - a skim coat at this point that should allow for the final on this core repair.
