Installing the Thru Hulls
Oct 28, 2025
I stopped by Biscuit this evening to continue the progress towards completing the thru hull installations. I started by water-washing the fairing compound to remove the amine blush. I grabbed the random orbital and knocked down the higher spots after test fitting the thru hulls. After knocking down the high spots, I finished by hand-sanding to fair out the hull's surface surround the base of the skin fittings (or thru hulls). After achieving the fit I was looking for, I vacuumed the surface and wiped with acetone to remove the remaining contaminates.
Next, I wiped down the thru hulls themselves to remove contaminates that might prevent a good bond with the Boat Life Lifecalk. I applied a very liberal amount of caulk to the thru hull fittings and pressed into place, spinning them into their final seated position. After wiping away the squeeze out, I then taped off the heads of the thru hulls to protect from future bottom paint application. I was tempted to complete the job by applying the bottom paint, but I wanted to allow the caulk time to dry and so put off the anti-foul paint. Application of the bottom paint will complete this portion of Biscuit's restoration.
