Sanding Cockpit - Port (4-6-24)
Apr 6, 2024
Armed with a fresh supply of 6" sanding discs, I returned to work on the cockpit with the Bosch sander and focused on the balance of the port side broader surfaces. The sanding work is to remove the white/off-white paint and get the surface back down to the original gelcoat. Along the way, I'm inspecting and noting areas that will require some additional attention (filling, fairing, etc). The cockpit side decks, seating, coaming surfaces, as well as the sole is now complete. What is left in the cockpit to sand are the more fiddly spots, such as the gutters around the cockpit seat lockers and the tighter radius between horizontal and vertical surfaces. These more fiddly areas all require hand-sanding work and remain the least attractive part of the process. Not much more to comment on, or details to explain, as sanding is sanding...
There is a through-hull that is to be eliminated from the port seat vertical surface - an outlet for the bilge pump. Water was taken from the bilge and emptied into the cockpit, allowing the scuppers to take the water overboard. The location of the through-hull is a bit unsightly, and the process for eliminating contents of the bilge a bit messy, so it will be removed and glassed in. The new bilge through-hull will be located on the port topsides and will be bronze in material.
