Sanding the Decks for the 2nd Coat of Alexseal

Nov 18, 2025

Back from a recent trip, I wanted to get back to Biscuit to continue the effort on Alexseal application to the decks and cockpit. This next round of paint will focus on the decks; the cockpit effort will resume after the decks have been completed. There's a natural break between the molded fiberglass cockpit coamings and the decks, so to allow for easier and better application I decided to carve these two spaces up.

Arriving at the shop, I grabbed sanding materials and headed over to the paint booth. With 320-grit paper, I methodically moved from the coachroof, down to the cabin sides and onto the port side decks. From the deck, I moved aft towards the aft quarter stern and onto the larger field of the poop deck. The colder weather I painted in for the first coat resulted in, frankly, a terrible first coat. However, and this was known going into the first coat, I was happy to get paint on and was fully aware that subsequent sanding and fresh coats of paint were in the cards. Attention was given to the stubborn areas holding a lot of dimpling and flow out that juts did not result. From the poop deck, I made the turn to the deck on the aft starboard quarter and then continued forward to the bow. Finally, I finished at midships on the port side decks to conclude this sanding session. I followed up with a good once-over with the shop vacuum and a brush attachment.

In the coming day (Thursday), I am planning on taking advantage of more favorable painting temps to apply the second coat to the coachroof and decks. Making good progress towards completion of the restoration of Biscuit.
