Sanding the Spot-fairing Above the Waterline (11-25-24)
Nov 25, 2024
With the more intensive fiberglass and coring complete on the decks and coachroof, it was time to begin the final fairing work prior to primer paint. As goes with all restorations, the surface prior to paint should be gone over slowly in order to address the many minor defects that invariably hide themselves until such time. Biscuit was no exception. She was hiding, until now, many small pinholes and even larger voids that required fairing filler. The primer will also serve to create a smoother, more fair, surface, but addressing the voids now by fill-and-fair work allows the primer to serve as a better substrate for the topcoat paint. The product that I like to use in this step is a two-party epoxy putty, and in this case I used the Total Boat Total Fair product.
The Total Fair was applied in the previous work session, and now was time to hand-sand back to a fair surface and prepare for primer. I used a combination of 80-grit and 120-grit paper, utilizing the heavier grit to take nearly down to fair and the 120-grit paper to finish the job. I worked from the starboard aft quarter, around the taff rail area of the stern, and finished at the transverse of the companionway to port. I expect another longer session of this sanding work will prep the surface for primer.
Happy Thanksgiving to all!
