Start of Boom Hardware Install
Mar 31, 2026
Grabbing a quick hour after the office duties, I wanted to begin on installation of Biscuit's new boom hardware. I began with the new outhaul casting. I placed the outhaul into the boom extrusion, and using the existing (old) fastener holes, I marked the locations onto the casting itself. I then removed the outhaul and drilled out the holes, followed with tapping for #10-24 machine screws. I cleaned out of the metal detritus from drilling and tapping and then replaced the outhaul into the boom. Using medium strength threat locker, I coated the screws and secured them through the boom and into the outhaul casting - completing this part of the boom. The balance of my short time on Biscuit's boom was spent laying out the balance of the new hardware to be installed.
Prior to departing the shop, I attempted to remove the toggle yoke and pin from the old, weathered gooseneck fitting, which captured the tack of the mainsail. The stainless steel pin had essentially welded itself to the aluminum casting, proving impossible to remove. I elected to spray a good deal of PB Blaster onto the part and set it to the side. I will be back on the boom hardware later in the week to see if the pin can be freed from the gooseneck fitting. Rig Rite will be called upon if I ultimately cannot free the pin.
