Stbd Rub Rail, Taffrail, and Varnish Work

Sep 21, 2025

Over the weekend I managed to complete the dry-fitting of the toe and rub rails, marked areas on the rails in situ, removed the rails, and then worked those areas marked for further refinement. But prior to removing the rails, I measured for the final dimension of the taffrail. A small pull saw and a sharp tape line aided my efforts in trimming the overall length of the rail, as it is aligned athwartship across the stern. I allowed for a small "channel" of deck between the taffrail and the toe rail, promoting quick clearing of any deck wash coming from spicy conditions.

After the taffrail was fit, I returned it to the shop and eased the edges where necessary to offer a more pleasing profile and tactile feel. I completed the work by hand-sanding the various brightwork components and then applied either a partially thinned varnish for build work on some pieces, but also a 50/50 thinned varnish for the sealer coat on the taffrail.
