Trimming Port Rail Bungs

Feb 15, 2026

As I had done in the previous work session on biscuit, I repeated the process for trimming and preparing the bungs for varnish: utilizing a small pull saw to remove most of the meat, followed by a finger sander and chisel to fine tune, and then finishing by sanding through to 320 grit paper.

I worked from stem to stern on the port side, followed by a quick vacuum and then a solvent wipe down to remove the remaining sanding detritus. I finished the port rails, toe and rub rail, with a slightly thinned coat of varnish.

The rails are in! Next up for the rails is to tape off the deck and topsides adjacent, and then apply build coat of varnish. A quick exchange in the evening with Biscuit's owner dealt with the toe rail limber holes, or drain holes. These will be decided upon and applied to the rails in situ.
