Trimming Starboard Rail Bungs
Feb 14, 2026
I worked on trimming the bungs today, beginning with the starboard toe and rub rails. I gathered a number of tool (sandpaper, chisels, finger sander, a small pull saw, and varnish), and set out for the task.
I began by placing a tongue depressor onto the rail as a spacer to protect the newly fabricated brightwork piece, and with the small pull saw, then removed most of the bung standing proud of the rail. I then used the small finger sander to take down the bung close to the rail. With most of the bung removed, I finished with the chisel and finally sandpaper (various grits from 240 to 320), taking the bung to fair with the balance of the rail.
I worked from the stern to the bow, and finished with an acetone cleanup. Lastly, I applied a somewhat thinned application of varnish to seal the bung and further promote bonding to its surrounding rail surfaces. After the port rail is complete, following the same process, additional coats of varnish will be applied to build the protective coating.
