Cutting Out the G-10 Backing Plates

September 30, 2026

Anticipating the coming weekend work, I grabbed a bit of time in the evening to prepare the G-10 backing plates for Somerledi's new thru hulls and seacocks. There are seven to be installed, a composite design by TruDesign, and so to meet install specs I ordered a 1/4" thick sheet of G-10 from McMaster Carr to make up the needed minimum hull thickness.

In a previous session at the shop, I had sanded the sheet of G-10 to remove the factory glossy finish and prepare the surface for future epoxy work. I had also determined the diameters of the G-10 backing plates for each of the seven thru hull locations: three 5" discs and four 4" discs.

With clamps and some spare lengths of 2x4 material. I created a platform for which I could then clamp to the bench top drill press, and with hole saws of the appropriate diameter then cut the backing plates out. The work was very straightforward and went off without a hitch.
