Glassing Anchor Locker Shelf & Hull Surface Prep

October 11, 2026

Over the last three days, work continues on rebuilding the anchor locker: new locker shelf and paint for the hull below and around the locker shelf itself.

Friday evening was spent sealing the underside of the shelf and finished with peel ply. to limit additional prep work prior to application of a layer of 1708 biaxial fiberglass to it. Wednesday began with a trip to the shop to continue work on the shelf. The peel ply was removed and two portions of 1708 cut to be applied to the shelf. After mixing a pot of epoxy, I wet the bottom surfaces of the two-part anchor locker shelf, applied the fiberglass and then wet that out to sufficiently saturate the material. Just prior to the application of the fiberglass, I skim coated a few areas on the larger portion of the shelf, filling shallow divots created by the peel ply. With the fiberglass in place, saturated and rolled out, I finished the two components with peel ply. I spent the balance of the time at the shop gathering tools and materials for the surface prep work required on the hull within the anchor locker space.

Once I arrived at Somerledi, the heaven opened and rain set in for the balance of the day. The day was essentially blown out by weather. I rolled up and headed home.

Sunday, I returned to Somerledi to resume work on the anchor locker space. Using the 5" ROS and both 60 and 80-grit discs, I removed the material to bare glass below the glassed-in stringers. I worked the tighter areas with the small 1" belt sander and an 80-grit belt. Upon completion, I vacuumed the sanding detritus and wiped the surfaces down with acetone to prepare for additional work. The surface prep is for both gassing in mounting cleats and for sealing the balance of the hull surface in bilge [coat] paint. The new anchor locker shelf will be entirely removable, with also a quick access removal panel (the smaller portion of the two-part shelf system).

Seacocks, 5 of 7, are ready to be installed as well, and materials are being shipped to allow for this.
