Sealing Anchor Locker Shelf Edges

October 6, 2026

Over the last couple evenings I spent time further fabricating the new anchor locker shelf and taking time to seal the edges. To that end, I first divided the new anchor locker shelf by separating a section on the aft-starboard side. This smaller portion of the shelf will be meant for a quicker hand and eye access into the lower cavity of the anchor locker - for retrieval and managing fouled line purposes.

While last aboard Somerledi, fitting the new anchor locker shelf, I made marks for aforementioned smaller removable portion of the shelf. Now in the shop, I transferred a cut line up the center line of shelf approximately two-thirds of the way towards the bow with a right angle to outboard. With a small circular saw, and a jigsaw to finish, I separated this smaller access panel from the shelf. At this point the anchor locker shelf had one layer of 1708 biaxial on the top, and so now I moved to begin protecting the edges with epoxy resin and 6oz fiberglass. The entire shelf kit, smaller access panel and the large balance of the shelf will both be removable, and so all surfaces require sealing in epoxy and/or fiberglass. I wet out the workable edge length, the components being propped up, with neat epoxy and then applied the prepared strips of fiberglass. This was left to cure overnight.

In the following working session, I sanded and removed the fiberglass running beyond the edge. this resulted in low spots and general unevenness the requires skim coating with thickened epoxy prior to paint. A quick clean up with acetone proceeded mixing a small pot of thickened epoxy. this thickened epoxy was then applied liberally across the edge-top border and along the edge itself, Carefully sanding this back in the next work session will reveal a smooth surface ready for paint. Roughly half of the length of edge has been sealed at this point, with the balance to come.
