Skim Coating Underside of Anchor Locker Shelf

October 16, 2026

Across a few evenings this past week, I was able to get the new shelf prepped and ready for a dry-fit in the anchor locker for the purpose of locating supportive cleats. With the top surface of the shelf glassed, skim coated and sanded, and having glassed the bottom surface, I was ready to apply fairing compound to this side of the shelf. The peel ply removed, I cleaned the edges and bottom surface with acetone and mixed a pot of neat epoxy. After applying epoxy to wet the surface, I thickened the remaining epoxy with West. System 410 micro-light fairing compound. I opted for a thicker application of the fairing compound on this first pass, or at least full coverage versus spot fairing with a skim coat. I also applied the fairing compound to the edges of the two-piece shelf system.

During a following evening at the shop, I sanded back the fairing compound, after water-washing the amine blush away, using the 6" Bosch ROS. Hand work was also done along the edges and interior corners to protect against burning through the work. At this point I had the bottom surface, top surface and edges fair, and fitting together nicely. There were a few low spots on the top surface that I needed to come back to with fairing compound, so in the true sense of the work, these were spot faired with a skim coating of West System epoxy and 410 micro-light to thicken it and fair with.

Friday evening I arrived at the shop to select tools and materials for Saturday work onsite with Somerledi, and at this point I quickly addressed the remaining areas that were skim coated. The two-piece shelf system was cleaned up and loaded into the car for dry-fit work on Saturday.
